Happy Native Language Day, Estonia!

Happy Native Language Day, Estonia!

The more languages you know, the more of a person you are! Did you know that Estonian and Ukrainian have more in common than it might seem?

Both languages have unique words that are hard to translate exactly. For example, Estonian has the word "õhinapõhine", which means doing something with great enthusiasm, driven purely by inner inspiration. In Ukrainian, a similar role is played by the word "znakhidka" – it can mean not only an object someone has found by chance, but also a person, event or idea that has become a real discovery and a pleasant surprise for someone.

Estonian and Ukrainian are unique in their melodiousness and harmony of sound. Estonian has three degrees of length for vowels and consonants, which creates a special rhythm of speech. Ukrainian has many open syllables, which makes it smooth and melodic. Both languages have a distinctive sound that cannot be confused with any other.

Our languages are a symbol of national identity. Despite all historical trials, they have endured, keep developing and continue to bring people together.

Let's cherish our languages, share their beauty and support one another!
