National Unity Radio Dictation in Tallinn: pupils of the Nadija and SUM schools take part

On 27 October 2026, Ukrainians around the world marked the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language and took part in the National Unity Radio Dictation. Estonia wrote together with Ukraine too.

In Tallinn, two schools that are part of the Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia joined the tradition: the Ukrainian Sunday school Nadija and the school of the Ukrainian Youth Association in Estonia (SUM). Most of those at the desks were children, joined by their teachers. The atmosphere was special: concentration, excitement, smiles and a sense of being part of something far bigger than a dictation.

This year’s dictation was especially moving. Before it began, the live broadcast connected Ukrainian communities in many countries, in some cases joined by Ukrainian ambassadors. There were also reports from the front: our defenders remain part of this tradition even in extremely difficult conditions.

The text, “A Letter That Never Ends”, was written by Ukrainian writer and veteran of the russian-Ukrainian war Artur Dron. It is a moving letter about love, separation, war, human closeness and the power of words. One line stood out in particular: “When the present is frightening, language protects us.”

The Radio Dictation is not just a spelling test. It is another reminder that the Ukrainian language is much more than a means of communication – it is our memory, our identity, our spiritual support and our bond with one another.

Our sincere thanks to the teachers and pupils of both schools – Anastasiia Kozachok, Tetiana Klymenko, Alla Inno-Yakymenko and Hanna Kiriienko – for taking part, for the wonderful atmosphere and for their love of the Ukrainian word.
