(About the association – AUOE and its development prospects)
“Lately many new followers have joined us, so we want to tell you more about the Association, its mission and areas of work. In turn, we will be glad if you want to tell us about yourself, join Ukrainian organisations in Estonia or set up your own society!
The Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia is an umbrella body of Ukrainian organisations across Estonia, founded on 30 May 2000. Its mission is to preserve and develop Ukrainian traditions, language, culture and identity in Estonia.
According to its Statutes, the Association aims to unite Ukrainian communities in Estonia, coordinate their work and make it more effective, and to support and develop Ukrainian-Estonian and international cultural ties.
The Association continuously admits new Ukrainian organisations, offers its members opportunities to develop, protects their rights and interests, and supports their participation in integration processes.
As of January 2023, the Association has 16 member organisations:
Under the auspices of the Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia, cultural events traditionally take place: the international festivals “Northern Star” and “Flowers of Ukraine”, concerts, literary and chamber evenings, vocal competitions, city cultural and educational events, conferences and other events for children and adults.
Sunday schools have been running at the member societies for more than 20 years: “Nadiia” in Tallinn, “Vodohrai” in Sillamäe, “Kalyna” in Valga and the Lesia Ukrainka school in Tapa. The creation of Ukrainian language classes in state gymnasiums in Tallinn and Sillamäe was also initiated.

Since 2014 the Association has actively provided all-round support to the Ukrainian people in their struggle for independence and freedom! With the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Association set up a Ukraine Aid HQ, which is still working and provides various kinds of help to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and civilians.
Since 2023 the Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia has launched new projects to develop Ukrainian culture and build cooperation between the Ukrainian and Estonian communities:
The Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia, run in cooperation with Kino Sõprus (Tallinn) and with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in Estonia. Twice a month we introduce Estonians and Ukrainians to classic and contemporary films by talented Ukrainian directors thanks to our close cooperation with FRESH PRODUCTION GROUP and other representatives of the Ukrainian film industry. Besides Tallinn, screenings have also been held in Tartu and Narva. Six films have been shown so far.
The project “Hearts of Ukraine with Estonia” – a multimedia project in cooperation with Etno TV Eesti, created with members of the Ukrainian diaspora in Estonia and people forced to leave Ukraine.
The project aims to unite Ukrainians far from home through a love of singing and folk art. For Estonia’s Independence Day and the anniversary of the war in Ukraine, the moving song “Ta lendab mesipuu poole” was performed and recorded as a thank-you to the Estonian people for their all-round help to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war. Next up is a new music video for Ukraine’s Independence Day!
“Get to Know Estonia” excursions for Ukrainians in Tallinn, led by Estonian public figure and board member of “Ukrainian Registered Cossacks of Estonia, Tallinn” Kalev Naur. Excursions have already been held at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and the Viimsi War Museum.
The ethno-festival “Vyshyvanka Unites / Rahvustikandi päev”, held in cooperation with the Estonian Open Air Museum (Eesti Vabaõhumuuseum) for World Vyshyvanka Day, achieved a great goal – uniting Ukrainians and Estonians in the wish to preserve age-old folk traditions and culture and to introduce each other to their heritage. There were several areas – a handmade fair, workshops, food courts, a concert and a show of Estonian folk costume – and a Baltic record was set for the largest number of people wearing embroidered shirts in one place.
The next festival will take place in May 2024.
Many new projects and events lie ahead; our team is actively working on projects to develop the Ukrainian community in Estonia. The Association and its members create opportunities for children and adults to take up music and dance, sing and draw, learn Ukrainian and preserve their culture, get involved in community work and take part in current events.
We invite everyone interested to cooperate with us.
Glory to Ukraine! Long live Estonia!”
