"What we should know about ourselves in wartime": an open lecture by Maryna Starodubska | Tallinn

The Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia invites you to the open lecture "What we should know about ourselves in wartime".

What does the value portrait of Ukrainians look like? Why does the demand for justice coexist with the wish for exceptions to the rules? How do we define "us" and "them", and how does this affect trust and well-being? Why do Ukrainians find it so hard to deal with state institutions? Political disagreements, mutual accusations and other polarising topics in our society – we will talk about all of this at the lecture.

Lecturer: Maryna Starodubska – author of the book "How to Understand Ukrainians: A Cross-Cultural View", adjunct professor at Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, guest lecturer at the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology, and a cross-cultural consultant with 15 years of experience.

What to know about the book "How to Understand Ukrainians: A Cross-Cultural View":

  • It is the first popular-science book in Ukrainian published in Ukraine about Ukrainian national culture, described through the lens of the leading international frameworks for analysing national cultures.
  • The book will be helpful both to readers interested in an accessible explanation of cross-cultural interaction and to a professional audience for whom the topic is relevant to their work and who need "concentrated" content without filler.
  • The bibliography alone includes 60 sources, and each chapter is followed by a list of sources with footnotes – 357 in total across the 9 chapters – so the book certainly does not lack evidence.
  • Ukrainian and international sources – the author analysed the latest studies published in Ukraine at the time of writing, compared these data with the work of foreign researchers and integrated them into the text.
