Protecting the rights of Ukrainians and opportunities for cooperation: meeting with Maksym Shcherbatiuk

Vladimir Palamar, Chairman of the Board of the Association of Ukrainian Organizations in Estonia and Adviser to the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Estonia, held a working meeting with Maksym Shcherbatiuk, Programme Director of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.

Maksym Shcherbatiuk is also a member of the expert council under the Commissioner's Adviser in Estonia.

The participants exchanged experience and information on the current challenges Ukrainians face. They discussed the protection of people's rights, supporting the unity of the Ukrainian community and possible areas of cooperation.

Particular attention was paid to opportunities for joint work under the "Partnership for a Strong Ukraine" programme. Estonia is one of the countries whose governments fund this programme. The discussion focused on how to combine the experience of human rights defenders, the work of civil society organisations and international support to provide practical help to people.

The Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union brings together human rights NGOs and works to protect human rights and freedoms. Its areas of work include legal aid, documenting human rights violations, advocacy and human rights education.

For the Association, cooperation with human rights organisations is an important part of supporting Ukrainians in Estonia. Sharing experience helps us better understand the community's needs and find ways to respond to the problems people bring to us.

We thank Maksym Shcherbatiuk for an open and meaningful conversation and his readiness to discuss further cooperation.
