On 2 September, the Riigikogu elected Ülle Madise President-elect of the Republic of Estonia in a secret ballot — she received 71 votes, with 68 required.
Ülle Madise will become the sixth head of state since the restoration of independence in 1991 and the second woman to hold the office. At the time of her election, Ülle Madise was serving as Chancellor of Justice of Estonia.
In her speech, the president-elect spoke extensively about trust, responsibility and the strength of Estonian society, and emphasized Estonia's special role in the security of Europe and the free world. "I am confident that together we can make Estonia bigger, happier and stronger," she said upon the parliament's decision.
Ülle Madise will take office as President of the Republic of Estonia on 12 October 2026. Until then, she remains President-elect.
The Association of Ukrainian Organizations in Estonia sincerely congratulates Ms Ülle Madise on her election to the highest state office. For the Ukrainian community, Estonia has for many years been not only a place to live, but also one of Ukraine's most devoted friends and consistent allies since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Association will continue working to develop Ukrainian-Estonian ties and cultural and people-to-people diplomacy, and hopes that Estonia's consistent support for Ukraine will remain unchanged.
