There are films you simply watch. And there are those that stay with you for a long time.
"U Are the Universe" is one of them.
A film you want to talk about after the credits. Laughter, silence, tears and a strange sense of hope – all in one film. That is how Ukrainian audiences describe "U Are the Universe".
Next Saturday, 24 January at 12:30, you too will have the chance to form your own opinion of this film, because "U Are the Universe" is coming to Tallinn!
Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia / Ukraina kinoklubi Eestis invites all Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine to Kino Sõprus for a screening of the science-fiction film "U Are the Universe", timed to Ukraine's Day of Unity!
The event will open with a performance by Ukrainian song and dance group "Volya"!
"U Are the Universe" is not just a film. It is a story that resonates in everyone's heart.
A new voice of Ukrainian cinema
This is not a typical drama or comedy – here a science-fiction drama is combined with a human story that resonates with our present. The film warms you when everything around is dark, and it sounds especially powerful now – at a time when Ukraine lives with war, loss and a constant struggle for its future.
Overwhelming emotion
Viewers write that it is a real emotional rollercoaster: you laugh – and a few minutes later you catch yourself in tears. The film leaves a deep aftertaste and stays with you long after the final credits. The story echoes the current state of Ukrainians – the search for connection in a world that is falling apart.
Humour and philosophy without pathos
"U Are the Universe" is often called an intellectual tragicomedy. There is lightness, irony and lively dialogue – and at the same time reflections on love, fear, responsibility and choice. No moralising. Very human.
Surprising visuals and music
Minimalist but confident graphics, thoughtful camera work and an atmosphere that serves the story. The soundtrack is a favourite with audiences: Ukrainian music blends organically into outer space and amplifies the emotions rather than distracting from them.
About humanity
This is a film about love and loneliness, about a hope that does not disappear even when there is nothing around but space. That is why the film feels so close: it speaks not about an abstract future but about us today.
What unites most reviews
Ukrainians are proud that such a film was made in Ukraine. "U Are the Universe" is called proof that Ukrainian cinema is maturing, taking risks and able to speak to audiences in the language of contemporary world cinema.
The screening is organised by the Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia as part of the Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia, which operates with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Estonia!

Don't miss this incredible story about space and a love that is stronger than distance, fear and even the end of the world
Pavlo Ostrikov's directorial debut is tender, bold and deeply human. The film drew applause at international festivals, received warm reviews from critics and became a real audience favourite. Its world premiere took place in September 2024 at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
In the future, Ukrainian space trucker Andrii Melnyk is on a routine run – transporting radioactive waste away from Earth. He is not alone on the ship: his only companion is the on-board computer Maksym – ironic, caring and very human. Then suddenly the Earth explodes. Andrii becomes, most likely, the last living person in the universe.
Loneliness, silence, the cold of space – and an unexpected radio contact with French scientist Catherine. They are separated by millions of kilometres and hours of signal delay, yet something real is born between them. Conversations, jokes, memories, fears and hope. The hope of seeing each other. The hope of not being alone.
This is not a story about technology – it is a story about a person who, even at the edge of the universe, longs for love, warmth and meaning.
