"Slovo House. Unfinished Novel" wins 6 awards at the Golden Dzyga film awards

Congratulations on a great victory to the producers and creative team of "Slovo House. Unfinished Novel", which yesterday won 6 awards at the 9th Golden Dzyga National Film Awards!

Your talent, dedication and love for Ukrainian cinema have made this film not only an outstanding work of art but also a powerful voice of Ukraine in the world.

The awards were won in the following categories:

  • Best Film (producers Oleh Shcherbyna, Yuliia Cherniavska, Pylyp Illienko, Rostyslav Martyniuk)
  • Best Director – Taras Tomenko
  • Best Supporting Actress – Nina Naboka
  • Best Production Design – Shevket Seidametov
  • Best Screenplay – Taras Tomenko, Liuba Yakymchuk
  • Best Music – Alla Zahaikevych

This is not only recognition from the Ukrainian Film Academy – it is recognition from the thousands of viewers who have already seen the film. It is recognition of the whole team, who worked for more than 13 years on this profound and prophetic film.

We are proud to have been part of this victory! It was with this brilliant film about the fate of the artists of the "Executed Renaissance" that the Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia / Ukraina kinoklubi Eestisbegan.

On 25 February 2023, Ukrainians in Tallinn saw "Slovo House" for the first time at the iconic Kino Sõprus. Later we created Estonian subtitles for the film and showed it to Estonian audiences at the Kumu auditorium, Tartu Elektriteater and Endla Theatre in Pärnu.

So we are immensely pleased that a film that has won so many awards could be seen not only by Ukrainians in Estonia but also by our Estonian friends.

During the Estonian premiere in 2023, director Taras Tomenko recorded a video message in which he reminded us that the roots of today's events lie in the 1920s and 1930s, in the tragic history of the Slovo House in Kharkiv. It was there that the Ukrainian nation went through its first great trial. Estonia understands this like no other, because it too suffered terrible repressions that left a bloody mark on the history of the Estonian state. That is why today our brotherly nations stand shoulder to shoulder against Russian fascism.

We urge everyone who has not yet seen "Slovo House" to watch it and show it to your European friends. Because now is the time when the world must know the truth about how the Soviet authorities erased a whole layer of the history of Ukraine's flourishing, and how they continue to do so today… The film shows the evil of totalitarianism and draws obvious parallels between the Stalin and Putin regimes.

We also congratulate the entire Ukrainian film community on Cinema Day, celebrated on 13 September!

Ukrainian cinema is more than art.

It is a weapon that breaks through the walls of propaganda.

It is a struggle for our identity, freedom and dignity.

It is a voice that is heard around the world even when the enemy tries to silence it.

And as long as we watch Ukrainian films, we do not forget who we are, and we remind the world what we are fighting for.

Watch "Slovo House. Unfinished Novel" – and pass on to the next generations that we will win.

Special thanks for the opportunity to show Ukrainian cinema in Estonia to FRESH PRODUCTION GROUP (Oleh Shcherbyna, Yuliia Cherniavska).
