The production is based on the play by Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko, a well-known Ukrainian playwright and founder of the social comedy of manners in classical Ukrainian literature.

The girl loves another – the serf Oleksii. Now the lovers resort to tricks to avoid an unwanted wedding. In the end, Uliana marries her beloved, and Stetsko is left with a pumpkin (the traditional Ukrainian sign of a rejected proposal).
