Kalyna in Valga: ancient history lessons and warm socks for Ukrainian defenders

Sunday, 1 November 2026, at the Ukrainian Society and Saturday School Kalyna in Valga was devoted to learning, creativity and good deeds.

In their Ukrainian history lesson, the older pupils learned who lived on the territory of today’s Ukraine in the most ancient times: they explored the sites of early human settlements, their dwellings, hunting methods and tools. They also discussed the geography of Ukraine — its natural conditions, rivers, caves and climate.

The youngest pupils revised the Ukrainian alphabet and talked about November, the last month of autumn. Despite the school holidays and the cold weather, the pupils are already preparing for the winter holidays: they are learning poems and a Christmas carol, and the lesson ended with a folk game.

The highlight of the day was the start of a new volunteer initiative. Craftswomen from different parts of Ukraine who now live in Valga gathered at Kalyna to hand-knit warm socks for Ukrainian defenders.

The society thanks the children, parents, teachers and craftswomen for working together.
