Estonia in the world’s cultural space

A new page in the life and work of the Ukrainian community in Estonia.

Today, Ukrainian schoolchildren who have started the school year in Estonia have the opportunity, in addition to their curriculum, to learn the language and culture of their country of residence, and Ukrainian communities can be a great help to them in this.

On 15 September 2022, at the invitation of Tapa Gymnasium history teacher Aliona Molodchyn, I held a lesson-discussion “Estonia in the world’s cultural space” using slides presenting the main pages of Estonian history through its culture: writing, religion, literature, theatre, song festivals, the links of Ukrainian cultural figures with the history of the University of Tartu, the first Ukrainian communities in Estonia, and so on. At the end of the discussion the pupils were invited to answer quiz questions based on the material and receive a prize according to the results.

At the end of the discussion the pupils asked about things that were still unclear to them or shared their own knowledge of the subject. We agreed to continue this cooperation, prepare themed lessons for holidays and historical events, and hold individual lessons for musically gifted children at the town’s Culture Centre.
