The screening will take place at the Sõprus cinema, located at Vana-Posti 8. The film is being shown as part of the Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia, organized by the Association of Ukrainian Organizations in Estonia, in cooperation with FRESH PRODUCTION GROUP, and with the support of the City of Tallinn as part of the Year of Cultural Diversity 2024.
The screening is also part of the Days of National Cultures in Tallinn, which will be celebrated from September 14th to 24th, aiming to showcase the diverse and fascinating cultures of the different peoples living here. We have also prepared another event dedicated to the Ukrainian Borscht Day, which is celebrated on September 14th in Ukraine. Don’t miss our next announcement!
The film "Slovo House. Unfinished Novel" has already been presented in Estonia, but given the fact that it has been in wide release in Ukraine for the last three months, we decided to introduce it to an even larger audience!
The film has recently been submitted for consideration as Ukraine's entry for the Academy Awards! The Ukrainian Oscar Committee will decide Ukraine's nominee for the Academy Awards on September 9th.
The full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine, which is happening now, had its beginnings with the "Slovo" building in Kharkiv – it was the first trial for the Ukrainian nation. The film tells the dramatic story of Ukrainian writers, poets, and directors who created in the 1920s-30s. By Stalin's order, they were gathered under the roof of the cooperative "Slovo" building to be forced to work for the benefit of the system.
This building held enormous significance for Ukrainian culture, but Stalin's machine operated with extraordinary cynicism. They all became participants in an experiment to form a new type of Soviet writer and to have complete control over the creative process. Most of those who refused to cooperate with the Soviet authorities were destroyed.
The film is about how the communist paradise turns into a communist hell. The story is based on real events. The film has won numerous awards and prizes at six international film festivals.
We will be happy to see you at the screening and support the development of the Ukrainian Film Club in Estonia!
We look forward to seeing you there!
